Alcaniz Castle was once the headquarters of the 12th Century Knights of Calatrava who ruled this area of Aragon. The impressive building stands high above the town. Much of the present castle dates from the 18th Century and it is now a parador. In the courtyard is a Gothic chapel. In the keep, the Torre del Homenaje, there are 14th Century frescoes depicting historical scenes.
