Algeciras dates back to Roman times when it was known as Portus Albus. Alfonso X1 of Castile took the site from the Arabs in 1344 but it was soon retaken by the Moors and destroyed. The town was then abandoned for 300 years until 1704 when it was rebuilt by refugees from Gibraltar. This interesting museum is housed in a 19th Century building with seven galleries containing exhibits dating from prehistoric to modern times.
