During the medieval era, the Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu was one of Europe`s finest hospitals. As well as caring for sick people, it was a home for orphans. The Gothic building was built over several centuries around a cloister on the site of a 12th Century hospice. It is now Catalunya`s National Library and houses millions of documents about the region`s history. The nearby chapel holds temporary exhibitions.
