The Arriaga Theatre is an impressive, ornate building with a sumptuous interior of chandeliers and antique furniture. Originally opened in 1890, the theatre is named after the composer Juan Crisotomo de Arriga. Born in Bilboa and a brilliant composer at an early age, he died in Paris before the age of twenty. The theatre was completely refurbished in 1986 but retains its furniture as well as the carpets made by the Royal National Tapestry Manufacturers. It is now the city theatre showing drama, opera, ballet, concerts and other cultural events.
