The Autopsy Theatre is an unusual, octagonal building that was constructed in 1768. It became a Navy hospital and anatomy courses were held here as well as research into the epidemics that plagued Cartagena in the late 18th Century. The building has now been renovated and visitors can learn about medicine and science in 18th Century Cartagena. Nearby are the remains of a Roman amphitheatre.
