The history of Banyoles started with its lake around which people settled. It is the largest lake in Catalonia and is about one and a half miles long. Fed by underground streams, in places it is over 100 feet deep. There are also pools around it and the lake is home to ducks, grebes, coots, herons and kingfishers. Boat trips are available and rowing boats can be hired or you may prefer to walk or cycle around it. An information centre is located beside the lake.
