Begona Basilica is the most important church in Bilboa. Designed by Sanchez Martinez de Arego, it is in the Gothic style and stands where the Virgin is said to have appeared long ago. A figure of the Virgin is in a niche of the main altar`s Neo-classical altarpiece. The basilica houses a 19th Century painting, La Coronacion Canonici de la Virgen de Bergona, by the Basque painter Echena. The splendid facade has Renaissance features whilst the bell tower is early 20th Century.
