Above the town of Almunecar stand the ruins of Saint Michael`s Castle. The fortifications were originally built by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans then expanded by the Moors into a huge fortress with more than forty towers and three gates. In the late 15th Century it was taken by the Christians, and during the Peninsular War the fortress was almost completely destroyed. Restoration began in the 1980s and visitors can follow a route through the remains, which include a dungeon and a museum.
