The picturesque Castillo de San Gabriel stands on a tiny island off Arrecife`s waterfront. It was built in the late 16th Century by an Italian architect called Leonardo Torriani. It protected the town and harbour from pirate attacks. The causeway crosses a drawbridge and outside the castle are ancient cannons. Inside the fort is an archaeological museum containing local finds such as coins, pottery and jewellery.
