On a cliff overlooking the sea, the Castle of San Jose was built in the 18th Century as a defence against pirates. Built of basalt, the castle has a moat and consists of two storeys with spacious halls and floors of black volcanic slabs. Cesar Manrique restored the castle in 1976 and this historic building now houses a Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also a restaurant overlooking the sea with views of Arrecife and Puerto de Naos.
