Castle of the Sad Countess
Arenas De San Pedro, Avila Province - Spain

Map
The Castillo de la Triste Condesa is a 15th Century castle which was built after King Enrique 11 gave Arenas De San Pedro the status of a village. He appointed Ruy Lopez Davalos of Castile to build a fortress. It is known as the Castle of the Sad Countess because the widow Dona Juana Pimentel ruled the village after the sad death of her husband Don Alvaro de Luna in 1453. It is possible to visit the castle. Cultural events are held here in August.
