The granite apse of Avila Cathedral forms part of the medieval town walls. It was built in the 12th Century, but the construction of the remainder of the cathedral lasted 600 years and was never finished. The cathedral was built in a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The west portal has carvings of wild looking men, whilst inside are Plateresque choir stalls, a painted altarpiece by Juan de Borgona and Pedro Berruguete, and the marble tomb of the 15th Century bishop known as El Tostado because of his dark complexion.
