The walls surrounding the city of Avila are the best preserved in Spain. Alfonso V1 ordered their construction in the late 11th Century after he had recaptured the town from the Moors. The 2.5 kilometre long wall has 88 towers and has been restored at various times. It is possible to walk along stretches of the wall from where you can enjoy great views. The best view of the wall itself is from the Cuatro Postes on the Salamanca road.
