The Convent of San Jose was the first convent that Santa Teresa founded after deciding to reform the Carmelite Order. The convent, founded in 1562, was built with the help of her relatives and the Bishop of Avila. In the museum are various memorabilia of her life. Santa Terasa travelled around Spain with San Juan de la Crux (St John of the Cross) to found convents of her reformed order, the Barefoot Carmelites.
