The Coves d`Arta are a network of underground caverns with weird stalactites and stalagmites. The chambers have been given names such as Purgatory, Paradise and Hell. It is said that Jules Verne was inspired after his visit to them to write Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Jaume 1 found 2000 Arabs hiding here during the Reconquest of the island. The French geologist Edouard Martel studied the caves in the 19th Century. The caverns are now illuminated and there are guided tours in several languages, including English.
