Deia Archaeological Museum and Research Centre was founded in 1962 by the American painter and archaeologist William Waldren. Occupying a converted mill, the museum displays finds from local sites and especially important are those from the Son Muleta Cave where remains of myotragus (mountain goat), now extinct, were found. The island is thought to have been occupied by about 4,000 BC and these first inhabitants hunted the myotragus as well as herding sheep. Beaker ware has also beem found near Deia.
