The Olympic Games of 1992 were held in Barcelona and a stadium with a capacity for holding 65,000 spectators was built on the site of the 1929 World Exhibition`s central stadium. The exterior, with its neo-classical facade, was retained, but all the inside was rebuilt, vastly increasing the seating capacity from 25,000. There had been plans for the 1936 Olympics to be held here, but they were cancelled because of the Civil War.
