The old, fortified bridge of Besalu dates from the 11th Century and has been rebuilt several times. This Romanesque bridge has seven arches and is somewhat angular because of the pillars being built on rocks in the river. It is over 100 metres long and, including the height of the tower, is 30 metres high. During the Middle Ages, a toll had to be paid to enter the town. The bridge suffered damage during the Spanish Civil War and was restored in 1965.
