Besalu was an important place of pilgrimage during medieval times and the Counts of Besalu built the Hospital of Sant Julia as a hostel for the many pilgrims. The hospital was in two parts with one part near the river being the hospital and the other part a church dedicated to Sant Julian. The building still has its 12th Century facade. It was used as a hospital in the early 20th century but it is now a social and cultural centre.
