The original church in Betancuria was destroyed by the Berber pirate Xaban de Arraez in 1593. At that time the little town was the island`s capital and it remained the capital of Fuerteventura until 1834. The present church dates from the 17th Century, although some of its columns and bell tower are from the earlier church. Interior features include a baroque high altar, painted side altars, a coffered ceiling and the original stone floor.
