La Cruz del Mar is an iron sculpture in the shape of a cross commemorating the saving of the town in 1755 from the devastation of an earthquake which was centred on Portugal. Although Chipiona was threatened by floods, it is said that a cross in this spot stopped the waves. The monument was rebuilt in the 1870s and renovated forty years later.
