The Monasterio de Yuste is the monastery to which Carlos 1 of Spain (the Holy Roman Emperor) retired to in the 16th Century after having dividing his empire between his brother and his son. It is situated in the Valle de La Vera, and the imperial apartments as well as the church are open to visitors. The emperor`s bed was placed so that he had a view of the altar. Below the monastery is the old village of Cuacos de Yuste.
