The monument to Christopher Columbus at the foot of La Rambla was built for the Universal Exhibition in 1888. Columbus was born in Genoa, northern Italy and, after moving to Portugal, he later settled in Spain, from where he discovered the Caribbean and America. The 200 foot high monument marks the place where he landed on his return in 1493. A lift leads to a viewing platform which offers panoramic views.
