Ceuta is a narrow piece of land that links Monte Hacho with the continent of Africa. The closest port to Europe, it was conquered by the Portuguese in 1415. In 1580, when Felipe 11 took the kingdom of Portugal, Ceuta passed to Spain. Some of the fortifications built by the Portuguese are still standing and the medieval fortress still has parapets and moats.
