The grand, cream coloured Teatre Nacional de Catalunya was designed by Barcelona architect Richard Bofill. Funded by the city council, it opened in 1997, and is said to be similar to the Pantheon, but has many glass walls, and its facade entrance is made entirely of glass. The building also has sky lighting. The theatre offers a broad range of Catalan theatre, dance and international performances.
