The Parish Church of Santa Maria in Nijar was built in the Mudejar style in the 16th Century. Its impressive defensive tower was built first and on one of its walls is a stone eagle that was commissioned by Carlos 1. Inside the church is some impressive Mudejar woodwork. There is also a beautiful piece of art by Alonso Cano. Near the square, on Calle Garcia Lorca, are many shops selling pottery and rugs,
