The Antigua Universidad was founded in the 16th Century and it is an attractive building with a splendid facade. It functioned as a university until 1824 and since 1875 it has been a high school. Visitors can look around the main patio with its Renaissance arches. A classroom where the poet Antonio Machado taught French from 1912 to 1919 is marked by a plaque.
