Olivenza was part of Portugal until 1801 and it is a colourful town with architectural styles of both Portugal and Spain. The town was founded by the Order of the Knights Templar in the 13th Century. Within the walled town you will find a museum and interesting churches, including the Iglesia de Santa Maria Magdalen which is in the Manuelline style and dates from the 16th Century. The 16th Century Santa Maria del Castillo is known for its beautiful reredos.
