To the east of the Royal Palace is the Parterre Garden, a formal garden designed by Frenchman Esteban Boutelou in the mid 18th Century. In the garden are the fountains of Hercules, Ceres and the Nymphs. There is also a small garden with busts of Roman Emperors. On the Island Garden, which is in the River Tajo, are many more fountains, including those of Venus and Bacchus set amongst trees and hedges.
