Placa Sant Jaume was the centre of Roman Barcelona and since medieval times it has been the city` political centre. The square is named after the church dedicated to St James that was demolished in the early 18th Century. The city hall dates from the 14th Century and inside is a staircase that leads to a Gothic meeting hall. Opposite this building is the Palau de la Generalitat, seat of Catalinian government.
