Playa Puerta del Mar is Almunecar`s main beach and is composed of pale sand. On the promenade is a monument to the Phoenicians who were the founders of Almunecar and started off the salt-fishing industry. Nearby is a plaque to English writer Laurie Lee who came here in the Spanish Civil War and later in the 1950s. He is the author of `As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning` and `A Rose for Winter`.
