Plaza de Don Federico Moyua was created in the late 19th Century when it was decided to expand Bilboa. The square was intended to be an oval shape and it is now a meeting place of eight streets. In the centre is a garden. Overlooking the square is the Hotel Carlton where Ernest Hemingway stayed. It was the headquarters of the republican Basque government during the Civil war before it went into exile when the city was surrendered.
