Sitting on the River Guadiana opposite Portugal, Ayamonte has a long history and its historic quarter is centred around the attractive Plaza de la Laguna with its palm trees. The oldest church is the Parish Church of El Salvador which offers views across to Portugal from its high tower. Other interesting churches are the Iglesia de las Angustias and the Convent de San Francisco with its impressive Mudejar ceiling.
