The Plaza Maria Pita is named after Maria Pita who thwarted Francis Drake`s attempt to set fire to A Coruna in 1507. She seized the English standard from the beacon and rallied the townsfolk to repel the siege. In the square is a statue of Maria with a spear held high in the air. She faces the Modernista Town Hall. The pleasant pedestrianised square has arcades on three sides and several cafes.
