The Puerta de Palmas was built as an entrance to the medieval, walled city and dates from 1460. The gate linked to the Bridge of Palmas spanning the River Guadiana which was built at the same time. The bridge has been rebuilt several times because of flood damage, but it preserves its basic structure. Marble shields once decorating the bridge can be seen in the Archaeology Museum.
