Sa Palomera is a jagged rock jutting out to sea and, as well as being a viewpoint, it is the setting for the International Costa Brava Fireworks Contest that takes place every July. First held in the early years of the 20th Century, it now attracts pyrotechnics from all over the world to take part in the competition for the coveted Blanes Trophy. Thousands of spectators throng the beach and promenade to watch the displays. Boat excursion operators offer trips out to sea so as to watch the fireworks against a backdrop of the town.
