Chipiona was a settlement in Roman times and the Santuario de Nuestra Senora de Regla is said to have started as a fortress which later became a monastery. This was in the 14th Century when Don Pedro Ponce de Leon gave it to the San Agustin monks who occupied it until 1835. From the late 19th Century the monastery has been occupied by Franciscians although it has been rebuilt. A cloister remains from the 15h Century and there is a museum.
