The Sierra de Gredos is a major mountain range to the west of Madrid. The highest peak is Almanzor, which rises to 2593 metres and below the summit is a picturesque lake, the Laguna Grand. There are many opportunities for walking and climbing, whilst the sierra is the home of mountain goats, as well as ibex, birds of prey and salamanders. From Arenas de San Pedro a road rises to the mountain pass Puerto del Pico at 1352 metres.
