Ciudad Rodrigo`s impressive town walls were originally built in the 12th Century with extra defences added in the early 18th Century. Ciudad Rodrigo is a frontier town and in 1810, during the Peninsular War, it was taken by the French. Two years later the British entered through a breach in the wall. A plaque now marks the site. A circuit can be taken of the walls. On the route you will pass the castle, now a parador.
