Velez Rubio is a lovely country town and in the centre stands the Baroque Iglesia de la Encarnacion which was built in the mid 18th Century after an earthquake had destroyed an earlier church. On its imposing facade is the coat of arms of the Marquis of Villaranca y Velez. There are towers on both sides with octagonal bell towers. Inside is a splendid wooden retablo carved by Francisco Zesta.
