The building of the huge, blue domed Basilica of Saint Mary started in the 17th Century by Francesc Verde but was not completed until 1783. This Baroque church has a splendid portal by Nicolas de Bussi. From the tower are magnificent views of Elche and the palm groves. The basilica is the setting for the annual, medieval Mystery Play of Elche. The play, which takes place in August over two days, is on the list of Unesco`s Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible.
