The impressive Calaforra Tower is an Islamic Almohade tower that was built around the late 12th Century. It was built to defend the gate at the entrance for the road to Alicante. This was the most important gate in the city of Elche. During the late 15th century an annexe was built onto the tower for the purpose of housing scales used for the weighing of wheat before it was taken to the flour mills.
