The Castle of San Miguel dates from the 16th Century when it was built to protect Garachico from pirate raids. This sturdy fortress withstood the eruption from the volcano of 1706 that engulfed the town and destroyed the harbour. From the castle battlements you can enjoy views over the town and out to sea. There is a museum. Steps lead down from the castle to rock pools formed when the volcanic lava met the sea.
