The Church of Sant Elm dates from the 15th Century and for hundreds of years it was a sanctuary for local people when pirates invaded the island. However, it was set on fire several times and the last building was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The present church houses a modern bronze statue of Christ. Another image, the Verge del Carmen is taken from the church each year on the 16 July for a ceremony in the harbour.
