The Obelisk of the Corsairs is dedicated to the corsairs who were authorised by the Crown to attack enemy ships and keep most of their booty. Ibiza`s security improved after their successful counter-attacks on pirate ships. One of the most famous was Antoni Riquer who was born in Eivissa in 1773. He sank the large Gibraltar brig Felicity after a battle in Eivissa harbour. The square opposite the monument is named after him.
