Cortegana is overlooked by its 13th Century castle which was built by Sancho 1V to defend the area from the Portuguese. The fortress has been restored and it is rectangular in shape with towers and a two storey keep. It has a small parade ground and there is a well preserved underground water cistern. The castle provides the setting for a medieval festival with jousting, falconry, music and a market which takes place every year in August.
