Elche is surrounded by more than 200,000 palm trees and this cultural treasure is a declared Unesco World Heritage site. The Moors originally planted and cared for the palm trees using oasis cultivation techniques. Starting off at Porta de la Morera, a signposted walking route of less than two miles guides the visitor around the most interesting orchards, taking in traditional buildings, well preserved orchards and parks. A leaflet describing the route can be obtained from the tourist office.
