The Gava Prehistoric Mines are about six thousand years old and they are said to be the oldest gallery mines in Europe. They were worked in Neolithic times to extract variscite, which is a green mineral used to make jewellery such as necklaces. The mines were in use for almost one thousand years. There is a museum where visitors can see artefacts such as pottery and tools as well as an archaeological park.
