Located to the north of Alhambra, the beautiful palace gardens consist of terraces, paths, pools, fountains, hedges, trees and flowers. In a far corner is the summer palace with its enclosed garden and long central pool with fountains. Nearby is the Patio de la Sultan where, it is said, the wife of the Sultan Abu-l-Hasan used to meet her lover. Other highlights include the Escalere del Aqua, a stairway with waterfalls, and the lower gardens. The annual International Festival of Music and Dance is performed at Generalife.
