The Iglesia de la Candelaria stands in a square at the outskirts of Frontera on the west coast of El Hierro. Frontera is in a wine growing region and is situated on the side of a mountain that forms one side of the volcanic crater El Golfo. Over many thousands of years, the crater has filled in with sediments and the land is very fertile. Near the church is its highly visible belfry perched on a red rock.
